Chapter 9 - The Bride in the Background

The next morning began with rain against the hospital windows and ended with a marriage clerk from Nevada blowing apart the last illusion of my life.

But before the clerk called, another piece dropped into place.

Hannah returned one more time, this time with a memory that had clearly been haunting her.

“At your reception,” she said, sitting on the edge of the chair like she might spring up and flee at any second, “Melissa caught the bouquet.”

I blinked at her.

“So?”

Hannah swallowed. “She held it up and said, ‘Second chances count too.’ Everyone laughed. Brandon laughed hardest.”

The phrase landed wrong immediately.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it sounded practiced.

Like an inside joke.

Detective Stein, who had come in just as Hannah said it, wrote it down without comment.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He listened in silence for nearly a minute.

When he finally spoke, his voice was very controlled.

“Email everything to Daniel. Certified copies too.”

He hung up.

For a second he simply stood there with the phone still in his hand.

I had known my father through strikes, acquisitions, lawsuits, funerals, and the death of my mother. I had seen him angry, grieving, exhausted, and triumphant.

I had never seen him look exactly like that.

“Dad?”

He looked at me.

“They found the certificate.”

The room went utterly still.

“Whose?” I whispered, though I already knew.

“Brandon Mercer—under the name Brandon Hale—and Melissa Cross—under the name Melissa Hale.”

Hannah made a choking sound.

My father continued, each word precise.

“They were legally married in Washoe County, Nevada, six years ago. There is no divorce filing. No annulment. Nothing.”

I stared at him, then at Detective Stein, then back at him again.

Nothing made sense for a full three seconds.

Then everything did.

Melissa at the wedding.

The ring.

The white dress in storage.

The shell company with both initials.

The possessiveness.

The phrase this time.

The woman in Indiana.

All of it.

I pressed my hand over my mouth because if I didn’t, I thought I might scream.

“My marriage…” I whispered.

Daniel Price’s voice came from speakerphone before anyone else could answer.

“Emily, under the law, your marriage to Brandon is void. He committed bigamy. Any claim he makes as your lawful spouse is false on its face.”

Hannah started crying again.

Detective Stein closed her notebook.

“And if we can connect the pattern,” she said, “this stops being only attempted murder and domestic assault. It becomes organized fraud.”

My father moved to the side of my bed and took my hand.

Brandon had not merely betrayed me.

He had selected me.

Courtship. Engagement. Vows. Our anniversary. Every tender apology after every cruel fight. Every plan for “our future.”

It had all been part of a long con.

And the woman I had thought was his mistress had never been waiting in the wings.

She had been his wife the entire time.
