Chapter 3 - What He Needed Before Midnight

By sunrise, they had moved me to a private recovery room.

Both knees were badly injured but not shattered. The doctors said I would need surgery on one and months of physical therapy on both. My hair had been hacked jaggedly above my shoulders. My wrists were bruised, my ankle was raw from the chain, and the toxicology screen confirmed benzodiazepines in my system that I had not taken voluntarily.

It should have felt like enough devastation for one night.

It wasn’t.

At eight in the morning, my father’s attorney arrived with a leather briefcase and a face like stone.

His name was Daniel Price, though I’d known him as Uncle Danny since childhood. He had helped my father build half the legal architecture behind Yates Freight and every company that followed.

He laid three photocopied pages on my blanket.

“These,” he said, “are what Brandon intended you to sign.”

I forced myself to read.

Emergency spousal operating authority.

Temporary medical incapacity transfer.

Authorization to consolidate voting rights across my subsidiaries.

All written to make it look like a protective marital arrangement while actually handing Brandon immediate control over everything from freight terminals to warehouse properties to a software company we had acquired the year before.

My stomach rolled.

“He wanted my companies.”

Daniel shook his head. “Not just your companies. He wanted the holding path connected to your companies.”

Dad folded his arms. “Say it plainly.”

Daniel tapped the third page. “If Emily had signed before midnight, Brandon would have had temporary control just long enough to trigger several pre-arranged transactions into a shell entity.”

“What shell entity?” I asked.

He handed me another document.

B & M Strategic Holdings, LLC.

The initials seemed innocent at first.

Then my eyes moved across them again.

B and M.

Brandon and Melissa.

My hand went cold around the paper.

“I want everything you have on Melissa,” my father said.

Daniel gave a grim nod. “Already started. And there’s more.”

He slid over a bank summary showing that the shell company had been formed only weeks earlier, funded through layered transfers from accounts linked to Brandon’s consulting business.

Only Brandon didn’t have a real consulting business. He had a vague title, some polished suits, and endless explanations about future deals that never seemed to materialize.

The room went quiet.

Then Dad said, “So this was always the plan.”

Before Daniel could answer, Detective Stein stepped back into the room.

“We interviewed sixteen guests overnight,” she said. “Some lawyered up immediately. A few admitted they were told there would be a humiliating ‘contract ceremony’ after drinks. Most claim they thought it was a twisted prank.”

“Most?” my father asked.

“Two told us Brandon specifically said Emily would ‘sign or sleep forever.’”

The words sucked the breath out of me.

Stein continued. “We’re also reviewing house security footage. Some interior cameras were disabled from the control panel, but your front entrance system stayed active.”

That system had been installed at my father’s insistence years earlier.

At the time, I’d rolled my eyes.

Now it had probably saved me.

Before leaving again, the detective paused.

“One guest is still unaccounted for,” she said. “A woman named Hannah Crowley. According to several people, she left as soon as deputies arrived. We want to know why.”

After she was gone, Daniel gathered the papers into a stack.

“Emmy,” he said carefully, “Brandon didn’t improvise any of this. He built documents, created a shell company, arranged witnesses, dosed the dog, drugged you, and timed it all against tomorrow’s trust review. That is not domestic chaos. That is strategy.”

I stared at the initials on the shell company paperwork.

B & M.

And for the first time, Melissa stopped looking like just a mistress.

She started looking like a partner.
