Chapter 8 - THE MARRIAGE HE TRIED TO CONTROL THROUGH SHAME

The weeks after the fire were uglier than the fire itself.

Derek could no longer control me financially, so he tried socially.

Mutual friends began hearing that I had “turned a marital disagreement into a criminal event.”

A cousin called to ask if I was “really sending Derek to jail over a car.”

Someone told my mother that Derek said he was “being erased because he couldn’t compete with billionaire in-laws.”

That phrasing was so perfectly Derek it almost impressed me.

He always knew how to make cruelty sound like injury.

Patricia advised silence.

“Let him talk,” she said. “Men like this usually over-explain.”

She was right.

At one point Derek sent me a twelve-page email that managed to include:

an apology,

a financial confession,

an accusation that my family enjoyed humiliating him,

and a proposal that if I withdrew cooperation with police, he would “quietly resolve the debt issue and preserve both our reputations.”

There was one problem.

He sent the email after being instructed through counsel not to contact me directly.

Patricia forwarded it to the court.

That helped.

So did the fact that my emergency motion was granted. I received temporary exclusive possession of the condo. Derek was ordered to surrender access cards, disclose financial accounts, and preserve all electronic records.

He violated the order within forty-eight hours by attempting to move money between two accounts Leslie had already flagged.

That triggered another hearing.

At the same time, the lender behind the burned Lamborghini formally notified him of default and requested repayment acceleration.

His insurance claim was frozen pending the arson inquiry.

His consulting clients began backing away.

The image he had financed, staged, and burned for control was collapsing faster than I expected.

And still, beneath all of it, one question stayed with me:

Did Derek truly think I would protect him after this?

Part of me feared the answer was yes.

Because maybe I had been protecting him in smaller ways for years.
