Chapter 4 - THE MONEY HE SAID DIDN’T MATTER

The next morning, I did what I should have done months earlier.

I opened every joint account statement line by line.

The unexplained withdrawals were real.

Not one or two impulsive charges.

A pattern.

Large payments routed to a lender I didn’t recognize.

Wire transfers marked as “consulting reimbursement.”

Two cash advances.

A personalized-plate fee.

Storage charges.

And one payment to the exact dealership that sold Derek the burned Lamborghini.

In three months, he had drained almost eighty thousand dollars from shared funds I believed were reserved for our condo renovation and tax planning.

He hadn’t merely hidden a car from me.

He had built a second financial life.

I took everything to Patricia Sloan, the attorney my mother had recommended years earlier “in case Derek’s pride ever turned into entitlement.”

At the time I thought she was being dramatic.

She wasn’t.

Patricia reviewed the statements, the forged finance folder, and the office recording.

Then she said, “Do not go home alone again.”

“Do you think he’s dangerous?”

“I think a man who commits forgery, hides debt, and sets fire to a luxury vehicle in his own driveway while blaming his wife is no longer operating inside ordinary boundaries.”

So I didn’t go back.

I stayed with my parents for the weekend and filed for emergency exclusive use of the condo, along with an order barring Derek from transferring, destroying, or concealing marital assets.

That same day, fire investigators informed police the Lamborghini had been intentionally ignited using an accelerant.

Insurance became involved.

So did the lender.

Derek began calling nonstop.

Then texting.

Then sending long emails alternating between apology and accusation.

You forced me into this.

You humiliated me at work.

I only wanted what should have been ours.

If you cooperate, we can explain this as stress.

There it was again.

Not remorse.

Management.

He wanted a version of events that preserved him.

I was finished helping him build versions.
