Chapter 6 - THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE EVIDENCE LOOK REAL

Gregory Shaw had been Whitmore Capital’s CFO for thirteen years.

He attended Michael’s mother’s funeral.

He stood beside Michael during the divorce.

He reviewed the supposedly fraudulent transfers and told Michael:

“The access trail points to Emily.”

Michael had believed him because Gregory was the person who knew the systems.

That was exactly why the lie worked.

The independent investigation began quietly.

No firing.

No accusations.

A forensic technology firm imaged relevant systems under counsel.

The original banking portal logs showed something important.

Emily’s user profile had indeed appeared on the transfers.

But the transactions were initiated from an IP address assigned to the Whitmore family office.

Emily was in Seattle during two of them.

Conference records and airline data confirmed it.

Another transfer occurred while Emily was in the hospital after a minor procedure.

The user credentials were hers.

The activity was not.

Someone had access to her authentication backup.

Who managed family-office device recovery?

Ashley.

Who approved vendor payment batches?

Gregory.

The two people Michael trusted most during the divorce.

The altered PDF records used against Emily contained metadata from Gregory’s reporting software.

That did not prove Gregory personally falsified them.

But it destroyed his claim that the packet came directly from the bank.

The hotel surveillance contractor had been paid through Alder Civic Strategies.

One of the suspicious vendors.

The money looped.

The evidence was not independent evidence.

It had been purchased by the same network Emily was investigating.

Then came the necklace.

The mansion’s security system retained limited entry logs.

Ashley had visited the house twice during the week before the necklace was reported missing.

Normal.

She was close to the family.

One visit occurred while both Michael and Emily were away.

Ashley told security she was collecting materials for Judith’s memorial foundation.

House staff admitted her.

Forty-one minutes.

The next morning, Michael’s mother’s jewelry safe registered an access event using an emergency management code.

Who had that code?

Michael.

His head of security.

Ashley, because Judith had once authorized her during cancer treatment.

The security company could not prove who physically entered it.

But suddenly the necklace appearing in Emily’s dresser was no longer miraculous.

Then the guard who actually found it changed the story.

His name was Thomas Keene.

He had retired six months earlier.

David located him in Arizona.

Thomas remembered Ashley giving exact instructions.

“Check the lower dresser drawers.”

Not:

Search the room.

Lower dresser.

Second drawer.

Beneath sweaters.

That was exactly where the necklace was found.

“Did that strike you as strange?” David asked.

“Afterward.”

“Why not then?”

“She said Mrs. Whitmore once saw Emily hide valuables there.”

Emily had never said such a thing.

Thomas also remembered something else.

Ashley insisted he use a particular security camera during the search because “Michael will need proof.”

That footage conveniently showed Thomas finding the necklace.

It did not show who placed it.

Michael watched the old clip again.

For eleven months, he had considered it irrefutable.

Now it looked almost theatrical.

Then Gregory Shaw abruptly resigned.

Email:

Personal health reasons. Effective immediately.

He left no forwarding explanation.

Michael’s corporate counsel froze his access before the resignation completed.

Forensic review found he had downloaded hundreds of historical vendor files during the previous forty-eight hours.

Not deleted.

Downloaded.

Why?

David had one theory.

“He knows someone is reopening the past.”

Michael asked:

“Ashley?”

“Maybe.”

Then David forwarded an old photo.

Ashley Bennett.

Gregory Shaw.

Robert Bennett.

At a charity gala six years earlier.

Nothing inherently suspicious.

Except the entity receiving one of Emily’s alleged “theft” transfers had been incorporated two weeks after that photograph.

Its registered manager?

Gregory’s brother-in-law.

The frame was becoming a financial conspiracy.

But why destroy Emily rather than simply stop the investigation?

May you like

Part 10 would answer that.

Not yet.
