Chapter 14 - THE ROAD WHERE HE FINALLY STOPPED

One year after Michael saw Emily collecting cans beside the road, they drove the same highway together.

This time Emily was in the passenger seat.

Grace and Ethan slept behind them.

They were heading to a pediatric appointment after visiting a small daycare they were considering.

Michael noticed the roadside pull-off before Emily did.

Then she saw it too.

The place.

Dust.

Heat.

The memory of twenty dollars landing near her shoe.

Michael slowed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Want me to keep going?”

Emily looked outside.

Then:

“Stop.”

He pulled over.

The shoulder was quieter in winter.

No brutal sun.

No Ashley.

Emily got out.

Michael followed.

She stood where she thought she had been that day.

“I hated you here.”

“I know.”

She gave him a look.

“Right.”

“Sorry.”

The corner of her mouth moved.

“I saw you watching them.”

“The babies?”

“Yes.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“You still drove away.”

Michael swallowed.

“Yes.”

“I thought that proved you hadn’t changed.”

“I almost got out.”

“That would have been worse.”

He looked surprised.

Emily explained.

“If you had confronted Ashley there, she would have known. She might have destroyed more evidence.”

“That’s why I left.”

“I know that now.”

For a while they listened to cars pass.

Then Michael reached into his wallet.

Emily’s expression sharpened.

“What are you doing?”

He pulled out a twenty-dollar bill.

She stared.

“Michael, if you throw that on the ground, I will leave you here.”

He laughed.

“No.”

He folded it once.

Then gave it to her.

“What is this?”

“The amount Ashley thought could define that day.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Neither do I.”

Emily considered.

Then walked toward a small roadside charity donation box near the gas station entrance.

She slipped the bill inside.

“There.”

Michael smiled.

“Better.”

“Much.”

They returned to the SUV.

As Michael opened Emily’s door, she stopped him.

“We need to talk.”

His stomach tightened automatically.

“Okay.”

“I’m tired of pretending we’re only co-parenting.”

Michael did not move.

Emily continued.

“I still don’t trust the version of you who threw me out.”

“Neither do I.”

“But you’re not behaving like him.”

Michael felt something dangerous rise inside him.

Hope.

He handled it carefully.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying we can try.”

“Try what?”

“Dating.”

He almost laughed.

“We were married.”

“Yes.”

“And now I’m asking you to dinner?”

“Yes.”

“Do I pick you up?”

“No.”

“Of course not.”

“You meet me there.”

“Separate checks?”

Emily thought.

“Don’t push it.”

Michael smiled.

That Friday they had their first date.

Again.

Small Italian restaurant.

No private dining room.

No chauffeur.

Michael arrived eight minutes early.

Emily arrived exactly on time.

He stood when she approached.

She looked at him.

“Nervous?”

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

They talked for three hours.

Not about Ashley until dessert.

Not about money until neither of them could avoid it.

Mostly they talked about who they were now.

Emily hated crime documentaries.

Michael had started cooking badly.

Grace preferred Emily when tired.

Ethan preferred whoever currently possessed food.

Ordinary information.

The kind they should have kept learning before their first marriage became a structure built mostly on assumption.

When Michael walked Emily to her car, he did not kiss her.

She kissed him.

Then stepped back.

“One date.”

“Yes.”

“Do not buy a ring.”

“I have learned something.”

“Debatable.”

She drove away smiling.

Michael stood in the parking lot and laughed alone.

No twist.

No revenge.

May you like

Just possibility.

For once, possibility was enough.
