Chapter 6 - THE FOLDER IN DIANE’S DESK

Two days later, detectives executed a search warrant at my parents’ house.

Brooke went with them because she knew where the study key was hidden and where our mother kept personal files.

I stayed at the hospital with Maisie, who was awake now, irritable, frightened, and asking why her head hurt. The doctors expected a full recovery, but concussion protocols turned every ordinary noise into a little test of patience and fear.

When Brooke returned that evening, she looked both shattered and steadier than I had ever seen her.

“They found the folder,” she said.

“And?”

“It was real.”

Inside were draft petitions prepared but not yet filed.

One sought temporary guardianship over Maisie “pending investigation into maternal instability and unsafe living conditions.”

Another sought emergency authority over trust-related decisions “to preserve the minor child’s financial interests.”

The language was almost funny in its hypocrisy.

Preserve.

Protect.

Stabilize.

These were the clean words people use when they mean seize.

There were also school-enrollment forms with my parents’ address pre-filled.

A list of pediatricians near their neighborhood.

And a page of handwritten coaching notes in my mother’s script:

Sarah gets emotional when challenged

mention Daniel’s death / grief

emphasize inconsistency

if Maisie acts wild, point to lack of discipline

everyone needs same story

That last line made Detective Walsh’s expression change when Brooke told me about it.

“Same story?” I asked.

Brooke nodded.

“She was planning witnesses.”

Not fake witnesses.

Worse.

Real people, intimidated into repeating a version that protected the most powerful person in the room.

That had always been my father’s gift.

My mother’s genius was turning his eruptions into paperwork.

Brooke also found text messages printed from some family group chats. Several relatives had been invited to the cookout with strangely specific encouragement to “come early so everyone can see how tense Sarah gets when Maisie starts up.”

The entire afternoon had been built as a stage.

Our parents didn’t expect a criminal investigation.

They expected family pressure to do what it always had—swallow the truth before it grew teeth.

For the first time, it hadn’t.
