Chapter 1 - THE SIRENS ON THE DRIVEWAY

By the time the ambulance reached my parents’ house, Brooke was already standing beside my Honda with her phone shaking in both hands.

Maisie still hadn’t opened her eyes.

The paramedics lifted her from the back seat while I answered questions with my own voice sounding like it belonged to someone else.

“She’s five.”

“Yes, she lost consciousness.”

“My father hit her.”

“No, she didn’t fall by herself.”

Behind us, my mother stood on the porch with her arms folded so tightly across her chest that her knuckles looked white. My father stayed just inside the doorway, no longer holding the belt because Brooke had seen it drop, but still standing with the same posture of a man who believed his anger should end every conversation.

When the first deputy approached him, Ray said, “This is a family matter.”

The deputy glanced at Brooke’s phone.

Brooke swallowed hard and answered before I could.

“No, it isn’t.”

She looked at me, tears running down her face.

“I have a video.”

That was the first time I saw real fear in our father’s eyes.

Not when I screamed at him.

Not when I called 911.

Not when the paramedics loaded his granddaughter onto a stretcher.

When Brooke said the word video.

At the hospital, I rode in the front seat of the ambulance because there was no room left inside me for dignity or shock or anything except the need to keep breathing until my daughter did the same.

As the sirens tore down the road, I looked back once through the rear window.

Brooke was still standing in the driveway holding her phone like it contained a live grenade.

And in a way, it did.
