Chapter 8 - THE REQUEST I DID NOT ANSWER

Two years after the wedding, I moved into a condo near Tempe Town Lake.
It was smaller than the house Ryan and I once planned to buy.
Every room belonged to me.
On my first evening there, I installed a security camera beside the front door. When the application asked who should receive administrator access, I entered only my own email address.
Then I tested the microphone.
“Nicole Carter,” I said clearly.
After the divorce, I had taken back my maiden name.
The camera replayed my voice without distortion.
Megan mailed a housewarming card.
Inside she wrote that she had completed her first semester and was learning to manage her own checking account. She did not ask to visit.
Brenda sent nothing.
Charles was still serving his sentence.
Ryan completed custody and entered a transitional program in Phoenix. Through our former marriage counselor, he requested one mediated conversation.
The note attached to the request was brief.
I used to believe loving you meant I could make decisions for you as long as I intended to fix the consequences. I understand now that I loved my place in my family more than I protected your life outside it. I don’t expect forgiveness. I would like one chance to answer whatever you still need answered.
I read it at my kitchen counter.
For most of our marriage, Ryan had chosen delay.
He delayed telling me about the company.
Delayed confronting his father.
Delayed protecting me until protection could no longer cost him anything.
I did not owe him an immediate response simply because he had finally stopped making excuses.
I placed the request inside a drawer.
Not the trash.
Not my calendar.
A drawer.
Outside, evening light moved across the lake. A delivery driver set a box beside my door and spoke into the camera.
“Package for Nicole Carter.”
My phone played the message clearly.
I carried the box inside, locked the door, and left Ryan’s request unanswered.
May you like
Whether I would ever sit across from him again remained uncertain.
This time, the decision belonged entirely to me.
