Chapter 6 - THE TABLE WHERE THEIR POWER ENDED

Brenda continued telling relatives that the family had been betrayed by an unstable new bride.

So I arranged one meeting.

Not to expose the financial case publicly. Marcus warned that careless disclosure could damage the investigation.

I invited only the people Brenda had directly contacted with false accusations.

My parents attended.

So did Ryan, Megan, Charles, Brenda, and two of Ryan’s aunts.

The meeting took place in a private conference room at Marcus’s office.

Brenda entered carrying a folder.

“I assume this is where Nicole finally explains why she destroyed our family.”

I connected my laptop to the wall monitor.

The recording began.

Everyone watched Megan order me to wash her private clothes.

They heard Brenda explain that a good daughter-in-law avoided conflict.

They saw Charles cross the room.

The slap sounded louder through the conference-room speakers than it had inside the house.

My mother looked away.

Onscreen, Ryan entered.

“You shouldn’t have provoked my father.”

The footage continued through the knife striking the table.

The angle clearly showed that I approached no one.

When the screen went black, one of Ryan’s aunts whispered, “Brenda, you said she chased you.”

Brenda straightened.

“She was holding a knife.”

“She put it in the table,” the aunt replied.

Charles pointed toward me.

“She recorded us in our own home.”

“The camera was installed with the family’s permission to protect wedding gifts,” Marcus said. “The service remained in Nicole’s name.”

Charles turned toward Ryan.

“You let her keep access?”

Ryan did not defend him.

Brenda opened her folder.

“This family has supported Megan, Ryan, and now Nicole. We are being punished for one emotional morning.”

Megan stood.

“No.”

Her voice shook, but she remained upright.

“You used companies in our names. You told me I was too irresponsible to ask questions, then planned to blame me when investigators found the money.”

Charles rose so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“You ungrateful child.”

Megan flinched.

For a moment, I saw the frightened daughter beneath the woman who had mocked me.

Then she stepped behind Marcus rather than behind her mother.

That was the first boundary I ever saw her choose.

Ryan removed several printed accounting summaries from his briefcase and placed them on the table.

“I gave investigators access to the Reynolds servers.”

Brenda stared at him.

“You turned against your father?”

Ryan looked toward me, but I gave him nothing to use as encouragement.

“I told the truth,” he said.

Charles moved toward him.

My father stood between them.

No knife.

No shouted threat.

Only a retired history teacher placing his body in front of another man’s son.

“Sit down,” Dad said.

Charles stopped.

For decades, his authority had depended on the belief that everyone would retreat before he reached them.

That day, no one did.

He sat.

The relatives left knowing Brenda’s story was false.

The larger financial case remained confidential.

But inside the Reynolds family, control had shifted.

Charles could no longer depend on everyone protecting the same lie.
