Chapter 9 - RACHEL FINALLY TOLD THE WHOLE TRUTH

Rachel asked to meet me without my family.
I chose a coffee shop.
Public.
Neutral.
Lily offered not to come.
I said I wanted her there, but at another table.
Not as protection.
As reality.
Rachel arrived ten minutes late and looked exhausted.
No perfect makeup.
No performance.
She sat down and said:
“Your mother has been calling me almost every week for eleven months.”
I waited.
“She told me you were depressed.”
“I wasn’t.”
“I know.”
“She told me you still wore the watch I gave you.”
“It was my father’s watch before it was ever yours.”
Rachel shut her eyes.
“She made everything sound like a sign.”
That was Diane’s gift.
Meaning manufacture.
Rachel continued.
Mom told her when I was lonely.
When I visited my parents.
When I skipped family dinners.
When Brooke saw another woman at my apartment.
Rachel admitted she had started dating other people but always returned because Diane convinced her my anger would eventually soften.
“And the drive-in?”
“Diane called Thursday. Said if we created a moment you couldn’t run from, you’d remember what we had.”
I almost laughed.
“So breaking into my apartment was romance?”
Rachel looked embarrassed.
“She said Brooke’s key made it okay.”
Then I asked about the ring.
Rachel’s face changed.
“She told me it had always been intended for me.”
Of course.
“She said your grandmother chose it for the woman who would keep you close to family.”
I thought of Grandma’s actual letter.
Ethan chooses his own life.
The lie was almost perfectly inverted.
Rachel rubbed both hands over her coffee cup.
“There’s something else.”
I waited.
“Your mother helped me hide the second affair.”
My whole body went still.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before you confronted me.”
For several seconds, the café disappeared.
Mom had known.
She had watched me question my instincts while protecting Rachel.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“She told me if I ended it immediately and never told you, your relationship could survive. When you found out about the first time, she told me not to mention the second because it would ‘destroy your ability to forgive.’”
I leaned back.
It wasn’t merely that Mom had preferred Rachel after betrayal.
She had actively helped preserve the lie.
“Why tell me now?”
Rachel looked toward Lily.
Then back at me.
“Because your mother said something yesterday that finally scared me.”
“What?”
“She said Lily would disappear like the others once your family made being with you uncomfortable enough.”
The others.
Plural.
My heartbeat slowed.
Not from calm.
From recognition.
Anna.
Maybe more.
Three separate clues had now converged:
Brooke’s unauthorized key.
Dad’s archived messages.
Rachel’s knowledge of a pattern.
The drive-in had not been a family overreaction.

It was a method.
And Part 10 was waiting in my father’s safe.
