Chapter 1 - THEY BROUGHT THE INTERVENTION TO MY DATE

The white SUV stopped two rows behind my Impala.
For half a second, I told myself there had to be another white SUV in Asheville with the same dent above the rear wheel.
Then my sister Brooke stepped out.
Rachel climbed out beside her.
And my mother, Diane, remained in the passenger seat staring directly at my car.
Lily looked through the back window.
“Please tell me those aren’t the people from the photograph.”
“They’re the people from the photograph.”
“Great.”
Her hand slipped from mine.
Not because she suddenly regretted being there.
Because embarrassment had entered the car with us even though nobody had opened the door yet.
Rachel reached us first.
She yanked open the rear passenger door.
“You seriously stayed here?”
I stared at her.
Eleven months earlier, Rachel Monroe had cheated on me.
Now she was standing beside my car like I had betrayed her.
“What are you doing here?”
She ignored the question and looked past me at Lily.
Her expression became almost amused.
“So this is her.”
Lily sat straighter.
Rachel reached inside and grabbed her wrist.
“Come on. Get out.”
Everything inside me changed.
I caught Rachel’s hand and removed it from Lily.
“Do not touch her.”
Rachel’s face hardened. “Your mother is waiting.”
“I don’t care.”
Brooke appeared behind her holding up her phone.
On the screen was the photograph from my apartment.
Mom.
Dad.
Rachel.
And my grandmother’s diamond engagement ring sitting on the coffee table like some kind of family verdict.
“Ethan,” Brooke said, “stop making this harder than it needs to be.”
“Harder for who?”
“Everybody.”
There it was.
The Cole family’s favorite unit of measurement.
Everybody.
Everybody was upset.
Everybody thought I should forgive.
Everybody knew what was best.
Funny how everybody never included me.
Mom finally climbed out of the SUV.
She marched across the gravel in low heels, arms folded beneath her cardigan.
“You embarrassed us enough tonight.”
Lily whispered, “I can leave.”
I turned toward her immediately.
“No.”
Mom heard me.
Her lips tightened.
Rachel laughed under her breath.
Brooke shoved her phone toward my chest.
“Grandma’s ring is at your apartment. Mom brought Rachel there because you two need to stop acting like children and fix this.”
I looked at the photograph again.
Something bothered me beyond the obvious insanity of the scene.
The photograph had been taken inside my living room before Brooke texted me.
Which meant they had not simply learned about my date and reacted.
They had already been waiting.
Prepared.
With the ring.
I looked at my sister.
“How long have you had my spare key?”
Brooke blinked.
“Don’t change the subject.”
“How long?”
Mom stepped closer. “Your sister has always had emergency access.”
“No. Dad had emergency access.”
Nobody answered.
That silence told me the first secret of the night.
My family had been entering my home more freely than I knew.
I took Brooke’s phone from her hand and looked at the photograph one more time.
Then I noticed something else.
Rachel wasn’t surprised in the picture.
She was dressed for the occasion.
Hair done.
Makeup perfect.
A bottle of champagne sitting on the table behind her.
This wasn’t an intervention assembled after I came to the drive-in.
It had been planned before Lily ever climbed into my back seat.
I handed Brooke her phone.
“Get away from my car.”
Mom stared at me. “Ethan.”
“I said get away from my car.”
For once, she had no immediate answer.

And for the first time in my adult life, I realized my mother wasn’t angry because I had made a bad decision.
She was angry because I had made a decision without her.
