Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Version of Fairness

Vanessa agreed to meet me at Rachel’s office.

Without Craig.

Her attorney came too.

She looked exhausted.

Still beautiful.

Still angry.

“You got the house because you sold a company.”

“I bought the house.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

She hated that answer.

She talked about childhood.

Dad missed her dance recitals because he worked overtime.

Mom couldn’t afford the clothes other girls wore.

I left for MIT on scholarship.

Built a software company.

Sold it.

She stayed closer to home.

Married young.

Had children.

Helped our parents more often in person.

“You got to become successful because the rest of us stayed behind.”

That sentence contained enough truth to be dangerous.

Vanessa had driven Mom to appointments.

Hosted Thanksgiving.

Helped Dad after knee surgery.

I lived in Boston.

Visited.

Paid for things.

But distance is still distance.

“You think that means the house belongs to you?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

She looked down.

“I think you bought something that made them need you more.”

That surprised me.

“You think I bought the house for control?”

“I think you like being the son who fixes everything.”

Maybe.

That accusation landed because there was something inside it worth examining.

Then Rachel redirected.

“Did you create the deed?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Did Ethan authorize it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Craig said we needed leverage.”

“For the loan?”

“Yes.”

There.

Finally.

She claimed Craig promised the private lender would only use the house as temporary collateral until his business stabilized.

“He said no one would lose anything.”

Rachel asked:

“Did you understand Ethan’s signature was not real?”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t tricked.

She knowingly participated.

Then she said:

“I thought you’d forgive me after.”

That hurt more than the forgery.

May you like

Not because she believed what she did was right.

Because she had already budgeted my forgiveness into the plan.
