Chapter 11 - Vanessa Finally Chose a Side
After Part 10, Vanessa stopped defending the loan.
Her lawyer advised full cooperation.
Craig called it betrayal.
She called it survival.
Neither description impressed me.
Then she did one thing that mattered.
She admitted she had lied to Mom and Dad for months.
Told them I supported Craig’s business.
Told them I expected to “share more” after the company sale.
Told Mom I had once said:
“Vanessa deserves part of what I built.”
I had never said that.
Why invent it?
“Because Mom would’ve stopped helping us otherwise.”
There it was.
Financial fraud inside emotional fraud.
Vanessa’s tears came harder.
“I thought if everybody believed you were okay with it, eventually you would be.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because you always fix things.”
I hated how familiar that sounded.
Successful Ethan.
Responsible Ethan.
The one who could afford the mistake.
Vanessa never planned around my consent.
She planned around my recovery capacity.
That was almost worse.
She entered into a civil settlement early.
Acknowledged the deed was fraudulent.
Waived any claim to the property.
Agreed to cooperate with title correction.
Accepted liability for certain legal expenses subject to her financial ability.
Criminal consequences remained with prosecutors.
No immunity guaranteed.
Craig refused.
He claimed Vanessa masterminded everything.
Emails showed otherwise.
Their sons stayed primarily with Vanessa during the separation.
I worried about them.
Logan had witnessed his father shouting at Grandpa.
Mason had helped carry boxes because Craig told him:
“Grandparents need smaller places.”
Neither boy had committed a crime.
I told Vanessa:
“Do not make them pick which parent is evil.”
She looked at me.
“You still care what happens to them?”
“They’re kids.”
