Chapter 7 - Sandra Came to the Ranch

Sandra surprised everyone by coming the next weekend.

She brought a casserole, a pie from a bakery in Richmond, and a smile that looked practiced.

Harold treated her politely.

Not coldly.

Not warmly.

Politely.

Toby was thrilled his whole family was together.

Benjamin spent most of the afternoon waiting for Sandra to mention the trust.

She held out longer than he expected.

It was after dessert, while Toby was feeding scraps to the barn cats, that she finally said:

“Martha seems very nice.”

Harold folded his napkin.

“She does good work.”

“Benjamin mentioned some kind of education trust.”

“Did he?”

Sandra flushed.

“Only that Catherine wanted Toby provided for.”

Harold looked toward the yard where Toby was laughing alone.

“Your grandmother wanted all children provided for. Toby is simply the one I have.”

Sandra swallowed.

“Benjamin and I are trying very hard.”

“At what?”

That landed harder than she expected.

On the drive home, she finally said what Benjamin had half-known all along.

“Yes, I panicked because I was ashamed.”

“Ashamed of what?”

“Of him.”

Benjamin gripped the steering wheel.

Sandra stared out the window.

“My father waited tables his whole life. My mother cleaned houses. I spent my childhood terrified that rich people would hear where I came from. When your dad showed up carrying pickles in a grocery bag while your boss sat in the living room, I felt twelve years old again.”

Benjamin said nothing.

Her shame didn’t excuse what she did.

It only explained why cruelty had felt easier than kindness.

Then she added:

“But if he has enough money for a trust, maybe he isn’t as helpless as you always said.”

Benjamin glanced at her.

“I never said helpless.”

Sandra gave a bitter laugh.

May you like

“No. You just acted like he was inconvenient.”

That sentence followed him all the way home.
