Chapter 14 - The Field in Spring

Spring brought survey crews to the west field and the first trust-funded scholarship assembly at Catherine’s old elementary school.

Harold attended in a clean plaid shirt and sat in the second row while two high-school seniors accepted awards in Catherine Whitmore’s name.

Toby sat beside him beaming.

Benjamin watched from the aisle.

After the ceremony, Martha handed Harold a packet confirming the first annual solar lease payment had cleared into the trust.

The numbers were larger than Benjamin had expected.

Not enough to turn anyone into a dynasty.

More than enough to send Toby to college someday without debt if the money was managed carefully.

“Your mother would be happy,” Harold said.

“I know.”

“No,” Harold replied softly. “You know now.”

That difference mattered.

The family gathered at the ranch that evening for supper.

Harold moved more slowly than he had the year before.

His knee bothered him more.

His breathing sometimes shortened halfway between the porch and the chicken pens.

No one ignored it anymore.

Sandra packed leftovers for him without being asked.

Toby insisted on setting the table.

Benjamin fixed the screen door before dinner.

Afterward, Harold handed him a sealed envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Nothing dramatic.”

Benjamin raised an eyebrow.

“Open it after I’m gone or after you’ve earned it. Whichever comes first.”

Benjamin stared at the envelope.

Harold smiled faintly.

“See? Your mother and I still know how to keep you curious.”

Benjamin slipped it into his jacket pocket.

He wanted to ask whether earned it meant trustee, forgiveness, or something else entirely.

May you like

He asked nothing.

Some questions felt too fragile to drag into daylight too early.
