Chapter 9 - THE SEARCH DOWNSTAIRS

Police returned to Rachel's basement with forensic technicians.
This time they knew what they were looking for.
The broken gate.
Marks near the door.
The mattress.
Food containers.
The baby monitor.
A small plastic storage bin held objects Drew later identified.
His blanket.
Lily's stuffed rabbit.
A flashlight.
Two children's cups.
And a bucket with a lid.
I did not ask what it had been used for.
I didn't need every detail.
Detective Hale found something more important behind the furnace.
A second baby-monitor camera.
It had a memory card.
Sarah had used the monitor system because she worked remotely on bookkeeping jobs while watching the children.
Most recordings had overwritten themselves.
Some short motion-triggered clips remained.
Nothing graphic.
Still devastating.
Drew knocking on the basement door.
Sarah's voice through the monitor:
“Sit down.”
Lily crying.
Drew giving her his cup.
Another clip showed Drew climbing the stairs.
The door opened a few inches.
Sarah told him to go back down.
He refused.
The clip ended.
Timestamp:
Five days before he reached my porch.
Twenty-two minutes later, another motion clip showed Rachel arriving home.
Drew was already limping.
The fracture's timeline now had a digital anchor.
Then the case spread beyond the basement.
Sarah worked as a freelance bookkeeper.
Several clients learned she was under investigation and paused work.
No one had convicted her of anything.
Businesses still made their own risk decisions.
Rachel's employer placed her on leave after learning about the child-welfare case.
My parents' old friends took sides.
Some blamed Rachel.
Some blamed Sarah.
A few blamed me for “letting police tear up family business.”
I stopped answering those calls.
Then Detective Hale showed me a payment spreadsheet from Sarah's laptop.
It listed Rachel's payments.
But not as babysitting.
The column said:
CARE HOURS / REIMBURSEMENT.
Some amounts were larger than Rachel had paid.
Another source was reimbursing Sarah too.
A trust account.
Aaron's children had a trust account.
I knew that because Aaron had named me successor trustee if Rachel ever became unable to serve.
I had never been told distributions were being made for childcare.

That discovery pushed the case from horrifying to something I still didn't understand.
And Sarah suddenly had a financial reason for making sure I stayed as far away from Drew and Lily as possible.
