Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME SARAH ASKED ME TO PROTECT HER

Sarah asked for one final conversation before a major court date in her case.

My lawyer advised that I did not need to go.

I chose to.

Public conference room.

Attorneys nearby.

No children.

She looked familiar enough to hurt.

Same hands.

Same voice.

Same woman who had sat beside me at Aaron's funeral.

“I loved you,” she said.

“I know.”

“I still do.”

I didn't answer.

She wiped her eyes.

“I never meant for Drew to get hurt.”

“That isn't the whole issue.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Her face tightened.

“I was drowning too, Daniel.”

There it was.

The sentence I had once spent my life responding to.

Sarah overwhelmed?

I fixed things.

Sarah afraid?

I reassured.

Sarah ashamed?

I made it smaller.

This time I let the sentence remain hers.

“I didn't know how to tell you we'd burned through so much money,” she said. “I couldn't stand that Rachel got help because Aaron died while we couldn't even afford another treatment.”

I felt anger.

Then sadness.

“You were jealous of children whose father was dead.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“When you say it like that—”

“How else should I say it?”

She started crying.

Then asked the real reason for the meeting.

“Your testimony about the finances matters.”

I said nothing.

“If you tell them I believed the childcare payments were legitimate—”

“Did you?”

She looked down.

There was my answer.

“I can't lie for you.”

“I'm not asking you to lie.”

“Yes, you are.”

She shook her head violently.

“I am asking you to remember I was your wife.”

I stood.

“I remember.”

That was the tragedy.

I remembered everything.

Our wedding.

The fertility clinic.

Road trips.

Aaron's funeral.

Christmas mornings.

Sarah teaching Lily to tie a shoe.

Human beings do not become strangers simply because the worst thing about them is discovered.

But love does not erase evidence.

“I'll tell the truth,” I said.

Sarah whispered:

“And after that?”

“There is no after that for us.”

Her face crumpled.

I left before my old instincts could make me sit back down.

The following week I provided records and testimony where properly requested.

No embellishment.

No revenge.

May you like

No attempt to make Sarah look worse than the evidence did.

The truth was already enough.
