Chapter 6 - My Mother Had Not Stolen Millions

I expected the accounting to reveal something enormous.

Millions.

Secret properties.

Some grand scheme.

Reality was uglier in a smaller way.

Over three years, Evelyn authorized approximately $418,000 in questionable household and trust-related expenses.

Chloe received about $164,000 directly or indirectly.

Designer purchases coded as interior expenses.

A leased vehicle listed as household transport.

Travel.

“Consulting.”

Rent for an apartment Chloe claimed was used for family staff.

It was where her boyfriend lived.

Serious.

Potentially fraudulent.

But not a criminal empire.

That mattered.

Evelyn had not been secretly emptying my company.

She had been treating family access as permission.

The way she always had.

When I was twenty-five and my first company succeeded, I bought her a house.

At thirty, I paid Chloe’s graduate tuition.

At thirty-three, I settled one of Chloe’s business debts.

At thirty-six, I added Evelyn to financial systems because:

“Mom can handle things while I travel.”

Every time I removed friction, I taught them something.

Julian will pay.

Julian does not ask.

Julian’s resources are family resources.

That did not authorize forged approvals.

But it explained how entitlement became normal before it became illegal.

Then Nathan found another problem.

The household account had not been drained solely to punish Madison.

Evelyn had been redirecting money because she believed Madison was preparing to leave me.

Why?

Madison had opened a separate bank account.

Met a lawyer.

Requested trust records.

Evelyn interpreted all three as divorce preparation.

Some were.

Madison had consulted a divorce attorney.

I found out from Madison herself.

That hurt.

“Were you leaving me?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“You weren’t home enough for me to know whether there was a marriage left to leave.”

No villain needed for that sentence.

Just me.
