Chapter 14 - We Did Not Move Back Into the Same Marriage

Madison did not immediately return to our bedroom.

Even after Evelyn left.

Even after Chloe left.

Even after accounts were frozen and lawyers became involved.

She rented a furnished apartment downtown.

I hated it.

I helped carry boxes anyway.

At the door I asked:

“How long?”

She said:

“I don’t know.”

I nodded.

For once, uncertainty did not trigger a solution.

No penthouse lease.

No expensive vacation.

No necklace.

No:

Let me make this right.

I started staying in Austin.

Reduced travel.

Promoted two executives I should have trusted years earlier.

Went to therapy.

Learned that being physically absent is not automatically neglect.

But using provision as a substitute for attention can become neglect inside a relationship.

Madison started counseling too.

Not to learn how to forgive me.

To understand why she had tolerated increasingly humiliating treatment before seeking outside help.

She had her own pattern.

Conflict avoidance.

Fear of becoming:

“The wife who turned Julian against his family.”

Everybody had a role they feared becoming.

So we all tolerated too much trying to avoid the label.

Months passed.

Madison invited me to dinner.

Then another.

I stopped asking whether she was “coming home.”

One evening she said:

“I miss our kitchen.”

I smiled.

“The old one?”

“No.”

Then:

“I mean us cooking.”

May you like

That was different.

We started there.
