Chapter 5 - Why They Really Wanted Her There

Margaret told us the truth in pieces.
That was how women from her generation often told hard things—carefully, apologetically, as though each honest sentence might hurt someone more than the violence already had.
Three weeks earlier, a certified letter had arrived at her house in Tennessee regarding the last small parcel she still owned from the family farm she sold years ago.
She had not sold all of it after all.
She kept one narrow strip along the county road because my grandfather had always said never surrender the access line. At the time, it had seemed sentimental and nearly worthless.
Now it wasn’t.
A distribution contractor expanding a regional freight corridor needed that strip to complete a multimillion-dollar warehouse route.
The opening offer on the parcel was $3.8 million.
Ryan had seen the letter when he visited her two weeks before my trip.
“He said he’d help me understand it,” Margaret told Maya. “Then he started asking whether I had a will, whether the land could go directly to the twins, whether I trusted Claire to manage a sale.”
He had also suggested that because I was “so busy,” it might be easier if Margaret gave temporary authority to him.
She refused.
That was when the pressure began.
Ryan called repeatedly.
Vivian called too.
Then came the trip to my house “to help with the children.”
Once Margaret arrived, they kept the twins with her nearly every waking hour and started slipping the papers in front of her whenever she sat down.
“They said if I loved you, I’d make things easier,” she whispered.
“Did they ever tell you why they needed it so fast?” Maya asked.
Margaret nodded once.
“Ryan said the buyer wouldn’t wait. And he said if I signed quickly, there’d be enough money for all of us to move somewhere grand.”
I looked up sharply.
Somewhere grand.
Suddenly the mansion across the street made a sick kind of sense.
Ryan had no idea I owned it.
But he had clearly been fantasizing about another life.

Not one he would build.
One he would seize.
