Chapter 2 - Behind the Gates

Ryan kept shouting from the other side of the iron gate until security arrived.

That was another surprise for him.

The mansion wasn’t just empty real estate. It was staffed, monitored, and fully functional because I had kept it that way precisely for the day I might need it.

“Ma’am, do you want him removed from the property line?” the guard asked.

“Yes,” I said. “And call the police if he comes near the gate again.”

Ryan’s face changed then. Until that moment, he still thought he could talk his way back into control.

Inside, I got Emma onto the sitting-room sofa and called our pediatrician’s emergency line. Her fever was 103.4. Oliver was exhausted, hungry, and wet through his pull-up. My mother sank into a chair and tried not to cry when the housekeeper brought her water.

“When did you last take your medication?” I asked.

Margaret stared at the floor.

“Yesterday morning.”

“Why not today?”

“Vivian said pain pills make me lazy.”

I closed my eyes for one second because I needed that one second not to explode.

Emma’s fever, Oliver’s condition, the state of my mother’s hands—everything in that kitchen had been wrong.

Dr. Patel met us at her after-hours clinic thirty minutes later. Emma had an ear infection and a respiratory virus. Oliver was overtired and dehydrated. My mother’s blood pressure was high, her arthritis badly inflamed, and the bruising on her face and arms serious enough that Dr. Patel quietly asked whether she should note suspected abuse.

I answered before my mother could.

“Yes.”

Margaret looked at me with panic.

“Claire—”

“No,” I said. “Not this time.”

On the drive back to the mansion, Ryan called fourteen times.

I didn’t answer.

Vivian left three voicemails.

The first called me ungrateful.

The second called me hysterical.

The third said, “Bring my grandchildren back before you regret this.”

I saved all three.
