Chapter 6 - The Company That Existed Before My Marriage

Harlow Family Management predated my marriage by decades.

It had been formed thirty-five years earlier.

Helen was twenty-nine.

But she was not the original member.

The original ownership documents listed:

Eleanor Grace Mercer.

I had never heard the name.

Leo claimed Eleanor was “some aunt.”

Helen called it “old bookkeeping.”

Records disagreed.

Eleanor transferred her interest to Helen shortly after giving birth.

“To whom?” I asked Evelyn.

“We don’t know yet.”

Leo’s current birth certificate listed:

Mother: Helen Mercer.

Father: David Mercer.

Nothing unusual.

But older estate records eventually produced a beneficiary form.

LEONARD GRACE

Date of birth:

Exactly the same as Leo’s.

Mother:

Eleanor Grace.

No father listed.

The paper alone did not magically rewrite Leo’s identity.

But it justified more questions.

Helen showed up at my temporary apartment two days later.

I refused to let her inside.

We spoke in the lobby with security twenty feet away.

She looked different without Leo’s house and my money framing her.

Angrier.

“You’ve ruined my son.”

“He hit me.”

“He made one mistake.”

“He had an affair.”

“That has nothing to do with me.”

“He gave you almost three hundred thousand dollars.”

Helen stopped.

I watched her face.

“That has something to do with you.”

“You have no idea what I did for that boy.”

“Then tell me.”

“I raised him.”

I became very still.

Not:

I gave birth to him.

Not even:

I’m his mother.

Just:

I raised him.

“Who is Eleanor Grace?”

Helen’s expression shifted.

Then she smiled too late.

“You’ve been digging.”

“Who is she?”

“Dead.”

“When?”

She turned away.

“When did Eleanor die?”

Helen kept walking.

She never answered.

That was when I stopped thinking Eleanor was financial history.

Dead people have dates.

People who refuse to provide them usually have reasons.
