Chapter 5 - Kendra Blake Was Not the Biggest Secret
The affair surfaced through financial records.
Hotel charges.
Dinner receipts.
A weekend in New York.
Her name was Kendra Blake, a development strategist working on Leo’s flagship project.
I read five messages.
Then closed the laptop.
Dad looked surprised.
“You don’t want the rest?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“What does message number forty prove that five didn’t?”
That was the first moment I understood recovery might involve refusing unnecessary pain.
Kendra admitted the affair through attorneys after Leo’s firm began investigating undisclosed conflicts.
I agreed to meet her once.
No dramatic sisterhood.
No instant friendship.
She knew he was married.
That mattered.
“He said you were emotionally separated,” she told me.
“We were sleeping in the same bed.”
Kendra closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know that.”
“You knew enough.”
She nodded.
Then she said something unexpected.
“There’s something about Helen.”
“What?”
“Leo hates her.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I thought so too.”
“He worships her.”
“No. He’s afraid of her.”
I stared at her.
Kendra said Leo sent Helen money because she “had something” over him.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she hesitated.
“But whenever he talked about having a baby, he said the same thing.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Once the first kid is born, Mom can’t control anything anymore.”
The sentence brought old memories back differently.
Helen constantly asking whether we had updated beneficiaries.
Helen insisting a future son should be named after her late husband, David.
Helen asking which hospital I planned to use.
Helen requesting copies of both our birth certificates for “family genealogy.”
And at thirteen weeks, Helen touching my stomach and whispering:
“Finally.”
Then:
“Once this baby is here, everything goes back where it belongs.”
I had thought she meant happiness.
Family continuity.
