Chapter 9 - Why Ethan Needed the Flood
Until then, I believed the storm merely exposed Ethan’s secret business.
Then we learned he had planned around it.
Not caused it.
Not predicted the exact flood.
Used it.
Five days before the evacuation, meteorologists were already warning of major rainfall and possible river flooding.
Three days before:
Boat bill of sale.
Two days before:
Riverglass inventory transferred from its commercial warehouse to Vanessa’s lake property.
One day before:
An email from Ethan to Vanessa.
IF THE ACCESS ROAD GOES, WE MOVE EVERYTHING BY WATER.
Then:
CLAIRE HAS THE SUV AND EMERGENCY STUFF. SHE’LL BE FINE.
That sentence made me physically ill.
Vanessa replied:
WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS?
Ethan:
SHE’LL GET THEM OUT IF IT GETS BAD.
Not:
I’ll get them out.
Claire will.
His plan depended on my competence.
The same competence he complained made him feel unnecessary.
Then another message:
AFTER THIS WE NEED TO FINISH THE FINANCIAL CLEANUP BEFORE I FILE.
Dana looked at me.
“What financial cleanup?”
We did not know.
Not yet.
David traced another transfer.
Then another.
Money moving from Harborline into Riverglass and back out as “management fees.”
Some returned to Ethan.
Some paid Vanessa.
Some serviced debt.
The structure looked like a failing business trying to appear healthier than it was.
Still, the phrase before I file mattered.
Ethan had been preparing for divorce.
The storm gave him a deadline to protect Riverglass first.
Then David found an email attachment named:
POST-STORM RESTRUCTURE
May you like
Created four days before the flood.
That was when the entire story changed.
