Chapter 11 - Vanessa Wasn’t Waiting for Him Forever

Vanessa cooperated with the lender’s investigation before Ethan expected her to.

That ended their romance quickly.

People assumed she turned on him because she discovered he was a liar.

She already knew he was married.

Reality was less flattering.

She protected herself.

Riverglass was failing.

If investigators concluded Ethan had submitted inaccurate marital disclosures or diverted funds improperly, Vanessa did not want sole responsibility.

So she produced messages.

Financial records.

Emails.

The $1 boat transfer.

The collateral discussions.

Their conversations about divorce.

She admitted the affair.

Admitted she knew Ethan planned to leave me.

Admitted she accepted money she knew came from our joint savings.

When Dana asked why, Vanessa said:

“He told me Claire knew he invested in side businesses.”

Technically, I knew he sometimes invested.

I did not know about Riverglass.

Another half-truth.

Vanessa also said something I did not expect.

“I told him to evacuate his kids.”

Ethan’s attorney objected to the characterization.

The message existed.

VANESSA: GO GET THEM. WE CAN FINISH TOMORROW.

Ethan:

BRIDGE IS STILL OPEN. CLAIRE WILL HANDLE IT.

That did not make Vanessa noble.

It did remove one story I had been telling myself.

My husband had not abandoned the kids because his mistress demanded it.

He made the decision himself.

That distinction hurt differently.

Vanessa and Ethan ended their relationship before our divorce was final.

Riverglass eventually entered a negotiated workout with its lender and later sold much of its inventory.

Harborline never completed the post-storm asset acquisition.

The loan dispute and financial investigation froze everything.

Vanessa lost the lake house after separate financial problems surfaced.

I felt no satisfaction.

By then, all I wanted was clean financial separation.

Dana once asked:

“Do you care whether they stay together?”

“No.”

I meant it.
