Chapter 3 - Daniel Brought Me the Phone

Daniel came to my house the next morning.

I almost did not let him inside.

He stayed on the porch.

“I have something.”

He held up his phone.

“What?”

“The party video.”

My chest tightened.

Daniel had been recording birthday messages for his mother in Arizona, who could not travel.

He had propped the phone against a fruit bowl during cake.

Then somebody called him into the kitchen.

He forgot it was still running.

“It recorded the glass?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

Daniel looked sick.

“More than I knew.”

We watched it with my attorney present.

The footage started nearly forty minutes before I carried Rosie from the bathroom.

Mostly noise.

Cake.

Relatives talking.

Children running through frame.

Then Bethany appeared.

She placed a plastic toy blaster on the table.

My mother, Evelyn, said:

“Nathan is going to lose his mind if you encourage that inside.”

Bethany replied:

“Good.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

The recording continued.

Mom lowered her voice.

“You said just make a point.”

“I am.”

“What point?”

“He treats Rosie like she’s made of glass.”

Then Dad’s voice from off camera:

“The kid needs to toughen up.”

That hurt.

But it was what came next that changed the tone.

Bethany looked directly toward the phone.

“Is that still recording?”

My mother said:

“I think so.”

Bethany smiled.

“Leave it.”

Daniel paused the video.

“I wasn’t in the room.”

“Did you know she wanted it recording?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

The footage later captured my mother asking me to get drinks from the garage.

Then Bethany taking the blaster toward the hallway where Rosie had gone with her cousins.

Twenty minutes later:

Me carrying Rosie back.

Bethany’s:

It was just a joke. She’s fine.

My punch.

My mother grabbing me.

My father throwing the glass.

No missing sequence.

No editing.

My attorney watched the entire clip twice.

Then said:

“Nathan, this recording does not make your punch disappear.”

“I know.”

“But it establishes context exceptionally well.”

Daniel stared at his hands.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Bethany knew you were planning to move.”

I looked up.

“Move?”

“To North Carolina.”

I had accepted a job in Raleigh.

Nobody outside immediate family knew yet.

“Why does that matter?”

May you like

Daniel looked toward the phone.

“I think your sister wanted this recording before you left Ohio.”
