Chapter 10 - Rosie Was the Bait
For weeks I thought the family conflict had escalated because Bethany believed Rosie was too sensitive.
That was true.
It was not the main reason.
The real target of the birthday “lesson” was me.
Three earlier details now fit together.
My mother sending me to the garage just before the game.
Bethany checking whether Daniel’s phone remained recording.
And my father’s draft note asking whether evidence of my temper could strengthen their visitation argument.
They did not need Rosie tougher.
They needed Nathan angry.
Bethany chose the suction-dart game because it could be dismissed as childish roughhousing if nobody reacted strongly.
But she also knew I would hate it.
The plan was supposed to produce a short video:
Nathan storms into party.
Nathan screams at sister.
Nathan threatens family.
Maybe Nathan shoves someone.
Then they would say:
This is the man taking Rosie away from everyone she knows.
Bethany underestimated two things.
How frightened Rosie would become.
And how clearly Daniel’s phone would capture the setup.
When Rosie ran into the bathroom, Bethany followed.
Rosie later remembered one sentence during her forensic interview:
“Aunt Beth said Daddy gets mad when I cry.”
Then:
“She said cry louder.”
That changed everything.
Bethany was not simply failing to comfort a hurt child.
She was amplifying distress because my reaction was the desired product.
My punch gave her part of that product.
But then my father threw the glass.
My mother tried to physically stop me leaving.
Daniel’s phone kept recording.
The same video showed the full ecosystem.
A family so convinced it had rights over Rosie that it was willing to distress her to influence whether her father could move away.
That was the twist I struggled to forgive myself for.
I had spent years thinking their constant involvement meant Rosie was surrounded by people who loved her.
She was.
That was not enough.
Love without respect for boundaries becomes entitlement very quickly.
And entitlement is capable of cruelty while still insisting it is acting for the family.
Rosie was not harmed because they hated her.
She was harmed because they believed access to her belonged to them.
