Chapter 8 - Cornelius Tried to Make Himself the Injured Father

The family split exactly as families do.
Not cleanly.
Marlene said:
“Cornelius still raised Daniel.”
Aunt Sophia answered:
“Nobody said he didn’t.”
Uncle Peter said chaining Ethan was wrong but DNA should have remained private.
My mother-in-law’s cousin said Evelyn should have told Daniel years earlier.
Everyone found a smaller argument because the large one was uncomfortable.
Cornelius did too.
He sent Daniel a twelve-page email.
Most of it described sacrifice.
School tuition.
Baseball.
Cars.
College.
First apartment deposit.
Wedding.
Business introductions.
Every expense transformed into evidence of fatherhood.
Daniel read three pages.
Then stopped.
“I never said he did nothing for me.”
That was the tragedy.
Cornelius had done a lot.
He taught Daniel to drive.
Attended graduations.
Stayed overnight at the hospital when Daniel had appendicitis.
Built him a treehouse.
Love and cruelty had occupied the same father.
People wanted Daniel to choose one version.
He refused.
“My childhood wasn’t fake because he hurt me.”
Then:
“The hurt isn’t fake because he loved me.”
That became his position.
Cornelius hated it.
He preferred acquittal or condemnation.
Both would allow him to become simpler.
Meanwhile, the case involving Ethan continued.
Several guests confirmed Cornelius had intentionally fastened the chain.
Party photographs showed Ethan remained within the fenced property.
One witness heard Cornelius say:
“Maybe sitting still will teach him.”
Another remembered:
“Your father should’ve learned this lesson too.”
Cornelius’s safety explanation deteriorated.
His attorney advised him to stop contacting us.
He ignored that once.
A package arrived for Ethan.
Inside:
A remote-control truck.
A handwritten note.
Grandpa loves you even when adults make mistakes.
I did not give it to Ethan.
We handed it to our attorney.
Why?
Because the temporary no-contact arrangement included indirect communication.

Cornelius had spent years believing his intentions overruled boundaries.
Even apologies became another opportunity to demonstrate it.
