Chapter 7 - The Severance

The emergency board meeting was held in the glass-walled conference room on the fiftieth floor. My father sat at the head of the table. Vanessa stood quietly in the corner, clutching a tablet, her confidence radiating through the room.
Adrian walked in looking like a hollow shell. I walked in behind him and took a seat against the wall.
"Adrian," one of the board members started. "Before we discuss last night's... incident, we need to finalize the transition paperwork."
Adrian didn't look at Vanessa. He reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick envelope, and placed it on the table.
"I am withdrawing my name for the CEO position," Adrian said, his voice completely flat. "Effective immediately. I am also surrendering my equity in Valeon Technologies and filing for divorce."
The room erupted into confused shouting. Vanessa dropped her tablet. She stared at Adrian, her meticulously crafted plan collapsing in real time.
"Furthermore," Adrian continued, reading from the script I had drafted for him an hour ago, "I have turned over evidence of corporate espionage regarding Apex Dynamics to federal authorities. The FBI is currently in the lobby."
Vanessa bolted for the door, but Valeon security stepped in front of the glass panels, blocking her exit.
I didn't stay to watch the fallout. I walked out of the conference room and took the private elevator down to the street.
By sunset, Adrian’s things were boxed up and shipped to a cheap hotel in the suburbs. The forty million had been quietly routed back into the pension fund. The divorce papers were filed, leaving Adrian with nothing but his freedom—a gift he had hardly earned.
I stood alone in the penthouse, watching the city lights reflect off Lake Michigan. My phone vibrated on the marble counter.
It was an email from my father. Attached was a new employment contract.

I looked at the signature line. The company was safe, my marriage was over, and the power my husband had tried to steal was now resting gently in my open palm. But as I stared at the flashing cursor, listening to the hollow silence of the massive, empty apartment, I wondered if sitting on my father's throne would require me to become exactly like the men I had just destroyed.
