Chapter 9 - EVAN’S WORDS

The letter began simply.

Hey, buddy. If Mr. Tony is giving you this, it means I’m not there in person, and I hate that.

Noah made a sound halfway between a laugh and a cry.

I kept reading.

But if you’re reading this, then I know one very important thing: you came back to the beach. That means you were brave.

The next line broke me.

And if you built a sandcastle before opening this, then I also know you didn’t let sadness steal everything from you.

I had to stop for a second.

Noah leaned harder into me.

Tony turned his face away, giving us privacy.

I went on.

I need you to know something. Sandcastles were never really about sand. They were about time. They were about me getting to sit beside you and watch how your brain works. They were about hearing you explain why every kingdom needs more towers. They were about loving you in a way we could build with our hands.

Noah was crying again, but quietly.

Not shattered this time.

Listening.

If someday I’m gone and you build one without me, I promise it still counts. I promise I still know. And if heaven has any decent beaches, I’m bragging about your engineering to everyone there.

I laughed through tears.

So did Noah.

That sounded exactly like Evan.

Then I reached the last part.

I left you this compass because castles wash away. That’s what tides do. But direction matters more than walls. If you ever feel lost, hold this and remember: home is not the stuff we build. Home is the people who love us while we build it.

By then my voice was shaking too hard to stay steady.

There was one final sentence at the bottom.

Plant the flag high for me, buddy. I’ll be watching. Love, Dad.

Noah took the letter back from my hand and stared at it as if memorizing the shape of every word.

Then he looked up at the place where the castle had been.

Only wet, flattened sand remained.

But something in his face had changed.

The grief was still there.

It always would be.

But the hopelessness wasn’t.

Not in that moment.

And that was when the real twist of the day finally unfolded in full.

Because Tony, who had stood silent through the reading, cleared his throat and said, “There’s one more thing your dad asked me to do if this day ever came.”
