Chapter 8 - THE BOX BENEATH THE NURSERY FLOOR

Maisie solved the next part by asking a child’s question.

“If Grandma Catherine wanted Mum to use the key, why would she leave an empty cupboard?”

Oliver stared at her.

Then at the walnut cabinet.

The back panel was unusually thick.

A carpenter removed it carefully.

Behind the cabinet, inside the wall cavity, was a second lock.

The rusted key opened that too.

A narrow metal box slid forward.

Maisie looked delighted.

Eleanor did not.

“Nobody touches anything until I photograph it.”

Inside were letters.

A sealed declaration.

A bundle of share certificates from an old family property company.

And a second photograph matching the torn one from the library.

When placed together, the two halves showed Edward Harrington, Marianne Vale and a baby.

Oliver wanted to read everything immediately.

Eleanor stopped him only long enough to catalogue it.

The sealed declaration bore Edward’s signature.

It had never been opened.

The envelope was marked:

To be released when circumstances require formal recognition.

The letters gave them clues but not the full answer.

Edward wrote repeatedly about “Ruth’s position”.

Catherine wrote that she had agreed to serve as protector of “the Vale interest”.

One document referred to a percentage of East Estate income being preserved “for Ruth and her lawful descendants”.

But the main settlement deed itself was still missing.

Perhaps Box 47.

Perhaps destroyed.

Hannah stared at the photograph for a long time.

“My mother never told me.”

Oliver looked at her.

“Mine didn’t either.”

Maisie pointed between their faces.

May you like

“You have the same eyes.”

Neither adult answered.
