Chapter 7 - The Tainted Ground

It took a month for the legal machinery to fully crush them.

Faced with the high-definition footage, Abernathy flipped instantly, testifying against Seth to avoid federal prison. Seth was indicted for aggravated assault, elder abuse, and massive wire fraud. Claire tried to claim she was manipulated, but the videos of her drinking wine on the porch while my parents slept in the dirt destroyed any sympathy the jury might have held. She was sentenced to eight years.

The fraudulent deed was voided. The farm remained ours.

On a quiet Tuesday in late October, I sat on the front porch. The autumn wind blew through the dry cornstalks, carrying the familiar scent of woodsmoke and turning leaves. It should have felt like a victory.

Inside the house, I could hear the television playing softly. My father was sitting in his recliner, his eye fully healed, though he walked with a new, permanent limp. My mother was in the kitchen, baking bread.

But earlier that morning, I had dropped a heavy wrench on the porch while fixing a railing. The sharp, sudden *crack* had caused my mother to scream and drop a full carton of eggs on the floor. My father had flinched so hard he nearly fell out of his chair.

They were safe, but they were permanently broken.

I looked down at the dog tags I still held in my hand. I had spent two years in a warzone dreaming of this porch, of the quiet safety of this land. I had fought to keep it, and I had destroyed the people who tried to take it.

The county sheriff drove past on the main road, tapping his horn in a gesture of respect. I raised a hand in return.

I stood up and leaned against the wooden post, watching the sun dip below the tree line. The house was finally mine again. But as I listened to the nervous, hollow silence stretching from the kitchen, I realized I didn't know if this place would ever truly feel like home for any of us again, or if the ghosts of what happened here would just live with us until the end.
