Chapter 4 - The Vanguard Escrow

I left Abernathy sweating in his ruined doorway with a strict instruction: if he warned Seth or Claire, I would send the video directly to the state attorney general before the sun came up.

Sitting in the cab of my truck, the dashboard clock glowed 1:15 AM. I had less than eight hours before my family’s legacy was legally erased and the money vanished into offshore accounts.

I opened my laptop and connected to my mobile hotspot. Working in military intelligence logistics hadn't just taught me how to secure a perimeter; it had taught me how to track money. I dug into the public records for Vanguard Logistics' recent land acquisitions in our county.

The purchasing LLC for our farm was listed as "Oak Creek Holdings."

I cross-referenced the LLC’s registration documents with the state database. The registered agent wasn't Vanguard Logistics. The agent was a shell company based in Delaware. I spent the next hour breaking down the corporate veil, matching the tax identification numbers to local business licenses.

When the final name populated on my screen, I stopped breathing.

The shell company didn't belong to Vanguard Logistics. It didn't belong to Claire.

It belonged entirely to Seth.

The pieces slammed together with sickening clarity. Seth wasn't splitting a three-million-dollar corporate buyout with my wife. He was the one *buying* the farm from Claire, using the shell company to hide his identity. He had convinced Claire to force the deed transfer to her name, promising they would sell it together.

But the paperwork Abernathy processed transferred the property to *Oak Creek Holdings* for a fraction of its value—just enough to keep Claire happy and quiet. Once the ink was dry, Seth owned the land outright. He was going to turn around and flip it to Vanguard Logistics for the full three million, leaving Claire with a tiny payout and all the criminal liability for the elder abuse.

Seth was playing her, just like she had played me.

I looked at the weather vane footage again. Claire wasn't just a monster; she was a useful idiot in my brother's endgame. And she had no idea she was about to be discarded.

I started the truck and put it in drive. It was time to let them destroy each other.
