Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN THE OLD PHOTOGRAPH

Trust counsel reconstructed part of the history.
Miriam was not alone in the founders program.
There were six participants.
Four settled.
One died without heirs.
One:
Miriam Hale.
Then an old photograph surfaced.
Arthur Ashford.
Rebecca.
Miriam.
And another woman.
Elena Moretti.
Giovanni’s older sister.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t mention this.”
His face hardened.
“I didn’t know Miriam knew Elena.”
Mom did.
“Elena worked in international purchasing.”
“How well did you know her?”
“Well.”
Giovanni sat.
That was the first time I saw him physically lose composure.
Elena died twenty-six years earlier.
Car accident.
No conspiracy.
No mystery.
But before her death, she had been helping Miriam understand the employee trust.
Mom looked at Giovanni.
“She told me Arthur was hiding amendments.”
“What amendments?”
“Changes that diluted employee rights after outside investors came in.”
“Did she have proof?”
“She thought she did.”
Then Elena died.
Mom became frightened.
Arthur told her the trust claims were weak.
Rebecca said fighting would destroy her career.
Pregnancy.
Threatened accusations.
Settlement.
She signed.
Giovanni stared at my mother.
“Why didn’t you contact my family?”
“Your father terrified me.”
That answer surprised him.
Giovanni’s father had been powerful.
Not innocent.
“He thought Ashford cheated Elena?”
“Yes.”
“And what did he do?”
“He threatened Arthur.”
Of course.
Mom laughed bitterly.
“I was surrounded by men proving why I needed to run.”
Arthur with lawyers.
Moretti with threats.
Everyone called it protection.
Nobody asked what Miriam wanted.
That history complicated Giovanni’s current role.
He had not inherited a clean moral position either.
His family had once responded to the same dispute with intimidation.
Then trust counsel found Elena’s old memo.
One line:
IF MIRIAM’S PARTICIPATION IS REMOVED, THE TRUST FORMULA BREAKS.
Rachel read it twice.
“What formula?”
Nobody knew yet.
But Rebecca did.
When confronted through counsel, she requested another meeting.
This time she brought her own daughter.
Twenty-eight-year-old Sophie Ashford.
May you like
Tyler’s younger sister.
And Sophie looked terrified.
