Chapter 13 - LILY LEARNED MY NAME BEFORE SHE LEARNED WHAT I HAD BEEN

The legal process lasted years.

Marcus was ultimately convicted for conduct connected to Leo’s murder and other crimes established through the investigation.

Others followed.

Some charges failed.

Some witnesses were unreliable.

Some old crimes could no longer be proved.

Real accountability is messier than revenge.

My own case resolved separately.

I forfeited substantial assets connected to illegal operations.

Businesses that could operate independently survived under new management.

Others closed.

I served a sentence.

Not long enough for people who hated me.

Too long for people who loved me.

Probably exactly the wrong amount according to everyone.

Emily brought Lily when professionals agreed visits were appropriate.

Never because I demanded it.

Lily called me Damon for almost a year.

Then one day she asked:

“Are you my dad?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you know?”

I could have told her:

Your mother lied.

True.

Incomplete.

Instead:

“Some adults were scared and made decisions without telling each other the truth.”

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa?”

I stopped.

She had seen one photograph of Patrick.

“Very.”

“Did scared people do bad things?”

Children have a cruel talent for accuracy.

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

She considered.

Then asked if the vending machine had cookies.

Conversation over.

I loved her for that.
