Chapter 12 - MARCUS BELL

Marcus eventually spoke.

Not to me first.

To prosecutors.

He tried to frame Leo’s murder as prevention of larger bloodshed.

That was the worldview we had inherited.

Sacrifice one person.

Protect the structure.

Marcus requested one meeting with me through attorneys.

I agreed.

Glass between us.

No weapons.

No empire.

He looked older.

“You destroyed everything.”

“No.”

“You handed them everybody.”

“Yes.”

“Your grandfather would spit on you.”

“Probably.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“You think Leo would thank you?”

That one worked.

I hated him for knowing where to cut.

“He wanted out.”

“He wanted to run.”

“Maybe.”

“Patrick ran.”

“Yes.”

“And look what happened.”

I waited.

Marcus said:

“I kept you alive.”

There it was.

Again.

Protection.

The word every controlling man eventually reaches for when consequences arrive.

“You killed my brother.”

“I stopped him from tearing open a war.”

“You threatened my unborn child.”

“I made Emily disappear.”

“You made a pregnant woman believe her baby would be murdered.”

“And she lived.”

He genuinely believed that mattered.

I understood Marcus then.

Not forgave.

Understood.

He measured morality by the catastrophe that did not happen.

No war.

Emily alive.

Lily alive.

Damon powerful.

Therefore his choices worked.

I said:

“Leo used to say a family still counted as long as someone was left to blow out the candle.”

Marcus stared.

“You spent twenty years making sure somebody was left.”

I stood.

May you like

“You never asked what kind of family survived.”

That was the last private conversation we had.
