Chapter 8 - The Letter Rachel Left with Her Lawyer
Rachel had one legitimate lawyer before disappearing.
Family attorney Naomi Price.
Rachel stopped responding to her days before leaving Colorado.
Naomi assumed Rachel had fired her.
Then investigators showed her the forged closure file.
She looked physically ill.
“I told her not to run.”
Naomi searched archived storage.
She found one sealed envelope Rachel had left with her.
Instructions:
Open only if my daughters are reported missing and I cannot be reached.
Naomi had never opened it because, according to official records, the girls had been found.
The forged closure had defeated Rachel’s own safeguard.
Inside:
copies of Grant’s threatening messages.
medical records documenting Rachel’s cancer recurrence.
a list of relatives she considered safe.
Laura first.
Victor second.
Two family friends.
And a letter addressed:
TO WHOEVER FINDS MY GIRLS
Rachel wrote:
I am afraid I may make a desperate decision because I do not believe I have enough time to win slowly.
She acknowledged considering flight.
She admitted Victor had offered to help.
She wrote that Laura did not know and should not be implicated.
Then:
Ava has the Mercer pendant. I have told her never to remove it. Its description is already in my police correspondence. If names are changed or papers become confusing, that necklace belongs to her and can help someone trace them back to me.
Michael had to stop reading.
The pendant was not valuable.
It contained no key.
No hidden account.
Rachel had turned an ordinary family object into a breadcrumb.
She was planning for the possibility that her own plan failed.
Then came another paragraph.
Victor loves the girls. But he loves being needed too. If I die, do not assume that loving them means he will know when to let go.
Naomi stared at the sentence.
“So she knew.”
Not that Victor would exploit them.
That he had a weakness.
Control disguised as protection.
Rachel had seen it before anyone else.
The letter also destroyed Victor’s claim that Rachel wanted him to keep the girls indefinitely.
Her preference after her death was explicit:
Laura first.
Victor only if Laura was unavailable and only through lawful court supervision.
The original disappearance remained Rachel’s wrongdoing too.
She had still planned to evade custody orders.
