Chapter 4 - Victor’s First Truth
Victor finally spoke through his attorney.
His first admission surprised everyone.
“Yes,” he said.
“I helped Rachel disappear.”
Not abduct.
Not kidnap from Rachel.
Help her.
Victor claimed Grant Holloway had escalated after the custody schedule expanded.
Rachel received photographs of herself leaving work.
Someone punctured one tire.
A dead bird appeared on her porch.
No evidence conclusively tied Grant to all of it.
Rachel believed him responsible.
Then she received notice that Grant wanted an extended summer visit.
“She was terrified,” Victor said.
“So you forged court documents?” Detective Reyes asked.
Victor’s lawyer interrupted.
Victor continued anyway.
“At the beginning, there were no forged documents.”
Rachel drove north with the twins.
Victor followed separately.
They planned to remain hidden for two weeks while a new attorney sought emergency orders.
Then Rachel learned her health had deteriorated.
She had been quietly undergoing treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer.
The disease had spread.
That changed everything.
Rachel no longer feared only Grant getting temporary access.
She feared dying and leaving the girls with him.
Victor helped her remain hidden.
Then the missing-child case became national enough that they panicked.
That was when the fake closure documents appeared.
“Who created them?” Reyes asked.
Victor stared at the table.
“My sister.”
That answer seemed convenient.
Rachel was dead or missing.
Easy person to blame.
Then investigators found something that supported him.
An old laptop recovered from a storage locker registered to Rachel.
Draft files.
Court templates.
Scanned signatures.
Email exchanges between Rachel and Victor.
One message from Rachel:
If they reopen this before I get them safe, Grant gets everything I was trying to stop.
Another:
I know what we are doing is illegal. I also know what happens if I die before the court believes me.
Victor was not innocent.
But the original disappearance had not begun as his scheme.
Rachel had designed it.
Michael hated that truth.
Then understood why he hated it.
He wanted the girls’ mother to be uncomplicated.
A victim.
Good mothers were easier to mourn when they never made desperate, dangerous choices.
But Rachel had.
She had broken the law because she believed the law would not protect her children quickly enough.
Whether she had been right about Grant remained another question.
That answer arrived from New Mexico.
Grant Holloway had been convicted eighteen months after the twins disappeared for aggravated assault against a later girlfriend.
The woman survived.
Her police report described stalking, threats, and blocking her vehicle with his truck.
Almost exactly what Rachel had alleged.
Grant was serving an eight-year sentence.
Rachel’s fear had not been imaginary.
