By summer, Lucas had started sleeping with the bedroom door open instead of locked.

That counted as victory.

He was in therapy twice a week and back in school gradually through a structured reentry plan. Rosa sometimes cooked dinner with them. Amelia and Lucas became inseparable in the peculiar, loyal way children become close after surviving adult danger near each other.

Henry made one more promise and kept it:

he bought Rosa the small apartment building she had once been too afraid to return to—but he bought it through a trust and placed it in her name after she completed legal residency stabilization with Naomi’s referral network. Rosa cried when he told her.

Amelia just asked if that meant they could paint her room yellow.

“Not yellow,” Lucas said immediately.

Everyone laughed.

So it became blue.

Henry also took Lucas back to the park where they used to fly kites. Lucas was quiet at first, staring at the open field as if too much freedom could be suspicious.

Then Henry handed him a red kite.

Lucas blinked at it.

“You remembered.”

“I remembered everything,” Henry said.

They ran together until the kite rose.

For one moment Lucas laughed without checking who was listening.

That sound did more for Henry than all the board votes and court orders in Manhattan.

Later that evening, while untangling string on a bench, Lucas said, “When I was in the yellow room, I drew you finding me because I didn’t want to forget your face.”

Henry swallowed.

“I found the drawing.”

Lucas looked up sharply. “You did?”

“It’s in my desk now.”

Lucas thought about that.

“Can I see it when I’m ready?”

“Whenever you want.”

He leaned against Henry’s side.

Then, softly, he asked, “Will Uncle Daniel ever come back?”

Henry looked at the kite pulling against the wind.

“No,” he said. “Not into our lives.”
