Chapter 4 - Benji Had Not Been Forgotten
The news initially called it:
CHILD RESCUED FROM OVERHEATED VEHICLE.
People assumed Edward Caswell forgot his son.
He did not.
That mattered.
Benji had arrived at the tower with his nanny, Rebecca Lane.
Edward had a custody handoff that afternoon.
Rebecca was supposed to stay with Benji in a private family lounge until Edward finished a board meeting.
At 9:17, Rebecca received a text appearing to come from Edward’s executive assistant.
Edward wants Benji downstairs. Wade will take him. You can go.
Wade arrived.
Rebecca knew him.
Corporate security.
Uniform.
Badge.
He told Benji:
“Dad wants you to wait in the car for a minute.”
Benji trusted him.
The black sedan belonged to Edward.
Wade had access to a spare key through executive security.
He placed Benji in the rear seat.
Fastened him into the car seat.
Closed the door.
Then left.
Rebecca went home.
Edward believed Benji remained with Rebecca.
Neither adult knew the truth.
Police found more.
The hood had not begun smoking simply because the car sat in the sun.
A coolant line had been cut.
Not enough to produce an instant fire.
Enough to create overheating and smoke once the engine had been running earlier.
Someone had also disabled one parking-lot camera.
A second camera showed Wade entering the garage area thirty-seven minutes before Benji was discovered.
He never called Edward.
Never called 911.
Never attempted the door.
Instead he tried to remove the six-year-old child who noticed.
That destroyed the forgotten-child theory.
