Chapter 14 - My Mother Went Back Into the Building

Two years later, Elena Ortiz entered Caswell Urban Systems through the front doors.
Not as an employee.
As a witness before an independent ethics and governance review.
The company had changed.
New CFO.
Outside audit committee.
Vendor controls.
Whistleblower procedures administered independently.
Edward had stepped away from several executive responsibilities while investigators reviewed what management had missed under both his father and him.
He eventually returned to a narrower role.
Accountability did not require pretending he personally caused every crime.
It required admitting the company had failed under his watch.
Mom testified for four hours.
When she came outside, I was waiting with Mrs. Alvarez.
“How was it?”
Mom looked up at the glass tower.
“Boring.”
I smiled.
“Good boring?”
“The best kind.”
Then she coughed once.
Not like before.
Her health had improved, though some respiratory problems remained.
We had moved into a slightly better apartment.
Nothing enormous.
Mom still compared grocery prices.
Still reused plastic containers.
Still yelled when I left lights on.
We were not magically wealthy because a rich man’s company wronged her.
But we were stable.
