Chapter 9 - THE BOARD WANTED QUIET, NOT JUSTICE
Once the Mercer claim was verified internally, Richard’s board reacted exactly as expensive boards usually do.
They worried first about exposure.
Not about Thomas.
Not about Diane.
Not even about the forgery.
About exposure.
Contingent liability.
Governance risk.
Reputation.
Market confidence.
One director suggested a confidential settlement “far below theoretical valuation” in exchange for airtight nondisclosure.
Diane laughed when Richard told her.
It was not a kind laugh.
“Your father stole my father’s life,” she said. “Your board wants a coupon.”
Richard did not defend them.
Instead, he did something no one in the company expected.
He placed an amount equal to the lower-end Mercer valuation into an escrow fund under independent control and publicly announced a founder-rights review tied to newly discovered historical irregularities.
He also transferred an immediate $5 million advance to cover Diane’s medical recovery, a home purchase, living support, legal representation, and a secure educational trust for Leo.
Diane tried to refuse it at first.
“I’m not charity.”
“No,” Richard said. “You’re overdue.”
Leo cared less about the money than the bicycle.
Every day he asked whether he could keep it near Diane’s hospital bed.
Richard had it professionally cleaned but not over-restored. He told the mechanic to preserve the scratches, the worn grips, the brass plate, and even the black tape under the seat.
“Because that’s how Grandpa kept it,” Leo said.
“Exactly,” Richard answered.
The outside lawyers then found one more document hidden in the pouch beneath the saddle.
It was tiny—easy to overlook.
A folded copy of an early stock-roll schedule with a handwritten note from Thomas:
If anything happens to me, Diane inherits my place. Don’t let the wrong people tell her she came from nothing.
Richard sat with that line for a very long time.
