Chapter 14 - THE PICTURE UNDER THE SADDLE

Before Diane and Leo moved into the restored house, Leo asked Richard one question he had been carrying for weeks.

“Did Grandpa hate you?”

Richard held the old photograph from beneath the saddle and thought carefully before answering.

“I think he was hurt by me,” he said. “But I don’t think he wanted you to hate me. If he had, he wouldn’t have kept my name on the bike.”

Leo nodded slowly.

“Why did he keep it, then?”

Richard turned the photo over.

In case the wrong man remembers.

“Because he hoped one day the right memory would come back,” Richard said.

At the public founder-recognition ceremony, Richard spoke without notes.

He told the true story.

About two young men with their first paycheck.

About a bicycle.

About a company that should always have carried two names.

About what happens when power edits history and no one questions the revision soon enough.

When he finished, he handed the microphone to Diane.

She looked out at the room and said only this:

“My father was not waiting to be made rich. He was waiting not to be erased.”

No one in the hall forgot that sentence.
