Chapter 5 - The Violation

By 11:00 PM, the rain had turned into a torrential Georgia downpour. I sat at the kitchen island in the dark, watching the security feed from my parents' front gate on my laptop.
I had spent the last three hours routing the stolen twelve million dollars out of Oak Creek Holdings and into a secure escrow account managed by my attorney. I had the digital forensics to prove Marcus initiated the transfer, but untangling my mother's forged trust documents would take months. Grant still had the leverage he needed to destroy her.
Headlights swept across the wet driveway.
A black SUV pulled up to the security gate. It didn't stop to buzz in. The driver accelerated, smashing through the wooden arm of the gate, and parked violently on the front lawn.
I stood up, my heart hammering against my ribs. I grabbed the heavy cast-iron fireplace poker from the living room and locked the front door.
Heavy footsteps pounded onto the porch. The doorbell didn't ring. Instead, Grant’s fist pounded against the reinforced glass of the door.
"Elise!" he shouted over the rain. "Open the door!"
My parents hurried into the hallway, my father holding a golf club, his face pale with terror. I held my hand up, signaling them to stay back. I walked to the door, keeping the deadbolt locked, and flipped on the porch light.

Grant stood there, soaked to the bone, his expensive suit ruined. The smugness was gone, replaced by a feral, cornered desperation.
"You moved the money," he yelled through the glass. "You think you're clever? I have the trust documents, Elise! I have the proof of what your mother did! You drop the assault charges, you sign the voting shares of Pinnacle over to me, or I ruin her life tomorrow morning!"
