Chapter 12 - THE CONVERSATION WE SHOULD HAVE HAD BEFORE THE DIVORCE

Julia and I finally had our real confrontation in a therapist’s office.
Not because either of us was ready to reconcile.
Because we were tired of discussing our marriage only through crimes committed around it.
Dr. Ellen Marks sat across from us and asked one question.
“What are each of you protecting?”
Julia answered first.
“My ability to trust myself.”
That sentence explained almost everything.
Nathan had undermined her perception.
Helen had minimized her concerns.
I had started verifying her memories instead of believing her fear.
By the end, Julia no longer knew whether her own mind belonged to her.
Then Dr. Marks looked at me.
I wanted to say Julia.
But that would have been flattering.
“The part of me that wants to believe I’m a good husband.”
Julia’s eyes shifted toward me.
I continued.
“When things got hard, I needed an explanation that didn’t make me powerless. Nathan gave me one. She was unstable. She was hiding something. She was pushing me away. If that was true, leaving became reasonable.”
Julia nodded slowly.
“You wanted a clean reason.”
“Yes.”
“There wasn’t one.”
“No.”
Then I finally asked what I had been afraid to ask.
“Did you stop loving me?”
She looked at her hands.
“No.”
The answer hurt more than yes would have.
“Then why agree to the divorce?”
“Because by then I didn’t know how to convince you of anything. And because part of me thought if I was legally separated from you, Nathan would stop using you as evidence against me.”
I covered my face for a moment.
Neither of us spoke.
Eventually she said:
“I don’t want you to rescue me now because you feel guilty.”
“I don’t want that either.”
“And I’m not ready to move back.”
“I know.”
“And I don’t know if I want to stay married.”
There it was.
The one answer no criminal investigation could give us.
“I know.”
She looked at me.
“But I want to find out whether the marriage we lost was actually ours.”
That was not forgiveness.
May you like
It was better.
A question neither of us was pretending to know the answer to.
