Chapter 8 - The Decision That Made Going Back Impossible

I asked Rachel to report the missing account and suspected trust misuse to the probate court.
It was the irreversible step.
Until then, Dad could still tell relatives this was an emotional fight between an angry daughter and a grieving father.
Once the court received the records, it became an issue of fiduciary misconduct.
The judge temporarily suspended Dad from both trusts and appointed an independent professional trustee pending a full accounting.
Dad’s access stopped that afternoon.
So did several automatic payments keeping his roofing company alive.
By Friday, employees were calling because payroll had bounced.
Dad blamed me.
“Twenty-two men could lose their jobs because you needed revenge,” he shouted during the only supervised family meeting I agreed to attend.
Meredith sat beside me.
Olivia sat beside Dad.
“Your employees were being paid with Olivia’s trust?” I asked.
“I was borrowing.”
“From children.”
“From my family.”
“Without asking.”
Dad leaned forward.
“You think every meal you ate after your mother died came from nowhere?”
“I worked.”
“You were a teenager.”
“And you were the parent.”
Olivia flinched.
Dad saw it and changed tactics.
He put his arm around her.
“Your sister wants to tear apart the only home you have left.”
That was when Meredith spoke.
“Daniel, stop making that child responsible for saving you.”
Dad stood.
The meeting ended.
Two days later Olivia packed a duffel bag and showed up at Meredith’s house.
“I’m not choosing Grace,” she said immediately.
“Nobody asked you to,” Meredith replied.
Olivia began crying anyway.
Dad had told her the court would sell the house because of me.
That wasn’t automatically true.
But the house was heavily leveraged, and Dad’s business creditors had begun filing claims.
Olivia was finally seeing the difference between Dad’s version of reality and the paperwork.
That night she knocked on my bedroom door.
“There’s something I didn’t tell Detective Keller.”
“About the crash?”
May you like
She nodded.
“Dad opened the hood before we left Aunt Meredith’s.”
