Chapter 14 - I Sold the Mansion

The townhouse never felt the same after Emma’s blood dried from the marble.

For months, the stain existed only in my mind.

The cleaning crew removed everything physical.

My memory kept it.

So I sold the mansion.

Lucia thought I was making an emotional decision.

Maybe I was.

But buildings can become monuments to identities we no longer want.

I moved into a smaller apartment overlooking the Hudson.

Still expensive.

I was not pretending poverty made me virtuous.

I also changed the company.

Independent board majority.

Outside compliance leadership.

No family-controlled security division.

No private investigators paid through nonprofits.

Mandatory reporting to an external audit committee.

Castellano Freight lost contracts during the investigations.

We paid fines tied to historical misconduct.

Margins dropped.

Some shareholders sued.

We survived.

That mattered because legitimacy finally became something we were willing to pay for instead of merely advertise.

Lucia and I spoke less.

Then more.

Never the same.

Probably better.

One evening she asked:

“Do you hate Dad now?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

“That sounds generous.”

“It isn’t.”

I looked at her.

“I just stopped needing him to be either a hero or a monster.”

He had been a father.

A criminal.

A builder.

A manipulator.

A man who loved us through methods that damaged us.

All true.

And none canceled the others.
