Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Hugged Me at My Wedding

Lauren Pierce appeared in the real-estate file.
I knew her.
That was the problem.
She had attended my wedding.
Dark green dress.
Perfect hair.
Commercial broker.
Paige’s “business friend.”
She hugged me after the ceremony.
“You and Brandon are perfect together.”
Two hours later, she texted my husband.
SHE STILL DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT MONDAY?
Brandon:
NO.
MOM SAYS WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE WEDDING.
Lauren:
AND THEN?
Brandon:
ONCE THE MONEY MOVES, EVERYTHING GETS EASIER.
Those messages came through legitimate divorce discovery weeks later.
They weren’t the only ones.
Hotel records showed Brandon and Lauren had been sleeping together for almost eleven months.
Before our wedding.
Before his proposal was finalized.
Before I chose invitations.
Nina asked if I wanted to keep reading.
“Yes.”
Lauren:
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WATCH YOU PLAY HUSBAND?
Brandon:
UNTIL THE PROPERTY CLOSES.
Lauren:
AND AFTER?
Brandon:
THEN I CONTROL MY OWN LIFE.
I put the phone down.
“Stop.”
Nina did.
I stared at the wall.
The wedding had not been the start of Brandon’s new life.
It was the deadline for a transaction.
Later, Lauren requested a meeting through attorneys.
I agreed because she had documents.
She looked worse than I expected.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“He told me your marriage was temporary.”
“You attended it.”
“I know.”
“You hugged me.”
Her eyes filled.
“I know.”
“I don’t need your guilt, Lauren. Tell me what matters.”
She swallowed.
“I thought you knew about BCR.”
I looked at her.
“Brandon told me you supported the investment but wanted Brenda to run it.”
“And my signature?”
“I didn’t see the guaranty until after your lawyer challenged the transfer.”
“Then?”
“I realized you weren’t resisting the structure.”
She paused.
“You didn’t know it existed.”
She handed Nina emails.
One from Brandon mattered more than the rest.
AFTER BCR CLOSES, SHE CAN QUIT.
Lauren:
WHAT IF SHE DOESN’T?
Brandon:
MOM WILL MAKE LIVING THERE IMPOSSIBLE. SHE’LL LEAVE ON HER OWN.
Lauren:
AND THE MONEY?
Brandon:
ALREADY IN THE PROPERTY.
I went cold.
The plan wasn’t merely to turn me into unpaid labor.
There were two acceptable outcomes.
If I stayed:
They got my accounting work, income access, household labor, and credit.
If I left:
My parents’ contribution and the pooled wedding money would already be trapped inside a Brenda-controlled property while everyone fought over characterization later.
Either outcome benefited them.
Unless I left before Monday.
May you like
Which I did.
Because Brandon could not wait twenty-four hours before showing me exactly what he believed marriage had purchased.
