Chapter 6 - The Lawyer My Wife Chose

The next morning, Lena Walsh opened Anna Mercer’s file.

They sat in her office with the blinds half drawn, Ellie coloring at a side table under Melissa’s watch, while Owen tried to keep his breathing steady.

Inside the blue envelope were copies of emails, handwritten notes, a chronology, and a letter from Anna dated six weeks before her death.

Lena read the beginning aloud.

“Graham Whitmore and Dean Foster have created a culture in which operational pressure repeatedly overrides safety reporting. I believe records are being altered to reduce audit exposure and preserve merger valuation.”

Owen closed his eyes.

Merger.

So that was the missing piece.

Aerolink had been pursuing a massive route-sharing merger with Western Continental Air, and Whitmore had been promising investors a spotless operational record.

A pattern of repeat maintenance issues would damage that.

Maybe destroy it.

Anna’s letter continued.

“I cannot yet prove criminal intent, but I can prove internal knowledge, selective suppression of documentation, and retaliatory behavior toward employees who resist unsafe dispatch pressure.”

Owen looked at Lena. “She knew all this?”

“She suspected most of it. She proved parts of it.”

“Why didn’t she go public?”

“Because she got sick. And because she was still trying to gather enough evidence that they couldn’t wave it away as a disgruntled employee complaint.”

Melissa leaned forward. “What’s in the USB?”

Lena didn’t answer right away.

Instead, she handed Owen a second note from Anna.

If Graham ever tries to destroy Owen professionally, it means he knows I left something behind. If that day comes, release everything at once. FAA. Board. SEC. Press only if necessary.

Owen read the note until the words blurred.

Ellie walked over and touched his sleeve.

“Was that from Mom?”

He nodded.

She studied his face, then climbed onto his lap without asking.

Melissa quietly looked away.

Lena inserted the USB into her laptop.

An indexed file opened.

Board correspondence.

Internal safety memos.

A draft complaint never submitted.

And one heading that made everyone in the room go still:

Contingent Release Trigger: Retaliation Against Captain Owen Mercer Following Safety Refusal

Melissa looked up sharply. “She set this up in advance?”

Lena nodded.

“She believed if they ever came after Owen publicly, it would mean they were scared enough to move too fast.”

Owen sat frozen.

Anna had seen farther ahead than he ever knew.

Whitmore thought he had cornered a single dad pilot in front of a terminal crowd.

Instead, he had stepped on a legal landmine designed by a dying woman who knew exactly what kind of men ran that airline.
